FSSAI registration and license are mandatory requirements for individuals or entities involved in food businesses in India. Here’s an overview of FSSAI registration and licensing process:
1. FSSAI Registration:
- FSSAI registration is applicable to small food businesses, including petty food manufacturers, retailers, distributors, marketers, etc.
- Eligibility Criteria: Any food business operator whose annual turnover does not exceed Rs. 12 lakhs is eligible for FSSAI registration.
- Application Process: The application for FSSAI registration can be filed online through the Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS) portal on the FSSAI website.
- Documents Required: Basic documents such as identity proof, address proof, proof of business ownership, and a declaration of food safety management system are required for registration.
- Approval Time: Once the application is submitted online, FSSAI registration is typically granted within 7 days.
2. FSSAI License:
- FSSAI license is applicable to medium to large-scale food businesses, including manufacturers, processors, transporters, storage units, importers, exporters, etc.
- Eligibility Criteria: Any food business operator whose annual turnover exceeds Rs. 12 lakhs is required to obtain an FSSAI license.
- Application Process: The application for FSSAI license can be filed online through the Food Licensing and Registration System (FLRS) portal on the FSSAI website.
- Documents Required: Detailed documents such as identity proof, address proof, proof of business ownership, layout plan of the premises, list of food products, Food Safety Management Plan, and supporting documents related to food safety standards and infrastructure are required for license application.
- Approval Time: The processing time for FSSAI license varies depending on the complexity of the application and may take up to 60 days.
3. Renewal:
- Both FSSAI registration and license are valid for a specific period and need to be renewed before expiry to continue the food business operations legally.
- Renewal applications can be filed online through the FLRS portal well in advance before the expiry date.
4. Display of License/Registration:
- Once granted, FSSAI registration or license holders are required to prominently display the FSSAI logo and their registration/license number on food packages or premises.
Compliance with FSSAI regulations is essential for ensuring food safety, quality, and hygiene standards in the food industry. Failure to obtain FSSAI registration or license or non-compliance with FSSAI regulations may lead to penalties, fines, or closure of the food business. Therefore, food business operators should adhere to FSSAI requirements and maintain proper records of food safety practices and documentation.
